8/30/10 Smooth as Glass

Surfboard loaded, we were off to the beach for my first surfing experience.  We arrived to find an ocean that was smooth as glass.  This was strange, especially considering that there were three tropical storms brewing in the area.  Time to switch to plan B: a drive down the coast, across some of the foothills and than back to Space’s place.  We stopped along the way at a fruit stand to pick up some breakfast.  Bananas right off the tree and some longan fruit (Like a smaller lychee that tastes a lot like a grape).

The coastal range is truly beautiful country, the vegetation is thick and the elevation changes on the road made the scenery even more dramatic.  We stopped a few times to take a look out over the valleys and the landscape, which when combined with the sounds of wildlife and the insects in the hills made the views fantastic.

Our route took us though some aboriginal villages, and while we weren’t more than an hour from Space’s house, you could feel that it was different.  Most of all, the people looked different from the Chinese and Taiwanese that I had encountered so far.  Space explained that like the North American aboriginals, their Taiwanese counterparts were a marginalized group of people who, because of negative attitudes and stereotypes towards them, found it difficult to mesh with the larger Taiwanese community.
