While sitting on the beach I struck up a conversation with an Eastern European girl by the name of Mikhaila. She was on a two week trip to Taiwan and was spending a couple of days in Hualien. Mikhaila was travelling alone and didn’t speak a word of Chinese. While she was enjoying her trip she also admitted that the language barrier was proving to be stressful.
Like lonely travelers do, we spent quite a bit of time talking. She was 27, originally from the Czech Republic , but living and working in Oxford England for the past 3 years as a catering assistant. She had a master’s degree in Economics, but wanted to travel before she committed herself to a job. Now here’s where it gets mind blowing; a Taiwanese "What The Fuck" moment that doesn’t involve the Taiwanese. Mikhaila, although not well paid by her own admission, enjoyed 3 months of paid vacation per year. Yes, you read that correctly, not 3 weeks…3 months.
The “What The Fuck” had gotten personal. What the fuck was I doing wrong in my life, and what the fuck is Canada doing to the collective "us"? There would be no clarity on this issue, only confusion.
And then it hit me, What The Fuck moment #2. I’m walking down the beach in what could be described as a paradise with a beautiful girl in a pink bikini that left little to the imagination. Her accent was pure sexiness and she had the physical qualities that are appreciated by the superficial man. We were all alone far away from the crowd, yet what seemed like the perfect moment was actually one of the most depressing conversations of my life.
I bid Mikhaila goodbye in the European fashion and wished her well in her travels. She was catching a bus back to the train station and going to Taipei .
As I rejoined the group the obvious question was “So? What Happened?”
